Our Focus
The Addiction Recovery Center (ARC) is part of Behavioral Care Services at Lake Chelan Community Hospital. Our focus is providing a holistic, cycle-breaking, educational and restorative program where men and women suffering from alcoholism and chemical dependency can discover a new way of living without drugs and alcohol. Our experienced chemical dependency professionals help patients encounter, confront and experience the challenges of recovery in a therapeutic setting conducive to healing. Located in a small hospital overlooking beautiful Lake Chelan in North Central Washington, the program consists of three phases: evaluation, treatment, and referral.

Intensive inpatient program ARC provides 24 hour structured environment with regular treatment-oriented activities seven days a week. We are a bio-psycho-social medical model with 12-step base rehab program. The core program is made up of the following:
- Detoxification - For those who are likely to suffer acute withdrawal symptoms there is medical management available on our medical/surgical unit. For those who are likely to suffer some discomfort from withdrawal, we also offer medical monitoring on our chemical dependency unit.
- Case Management - Treatment plans are developed in a collaborative manner between counselor and patient. Staff assist each patient in developing methods to change current destructive behavioral patterns.
- Group Therapy - Exercises and discussions facilitated by trained professionals to maximize the interactive process amongst peers.
- Recreational Therapy - Affords opportunities for exercise and development of appropriate outlets for energy. Orients the patients to alternative means to have fun in recovery.
- Nutrition Therapy - Available for those who have special dietary needs.
- Family Therapy - Educates family members regarding addiction, facilitates
communication, and encourages the family to develop their own support for recovery.
- Educational Sessions - Lessons are designed to teach the patient about the disease of chemical dependency, its effects on all aspects of life, and methods to help break the cycle of addiction. They also include sessions on stress management, relaxation and other life skills.
- Occupational Therapy - Evaluation and treatment of individuals limited by physical or psychosocial injury or illness.
- Mental Health Services - A Mental Health Professional consults with patient if deemed necessary in the treatment-planning process.
- Outpatient Referral - We recognize our inpatient services are only the beginning of recovery, and every patient is referred to an outpatient provider for following up on the issues identified during inpatient treatment. We also orient patients to involvement in 12-Step self-help groups as an adjunct to treatment.
Family Program Family members are encouraged to participate in the recovery process by attending our weekend family program. The family program includes group process, conjoint sesions as needed, and educational sessions on family dynamics and family recovery.
Detoxification At Lake Chelan Community Hospital, the emphasis is on the person. Detox/Withdrawal needs are specific to each individual. Upon arrival, our clients undergo a complete withdrawal/detox assessment by our licensed medical staff. Often we see clients with complex drug interactions/combinations and resultant severe complications.
We know that today most people are not treated long enough to complete detoxification and its withdrawal symptoms. One of the problems with inappropriate or inadequate treatment for withdrawal is relapse soon after discharge. As detoxification specialists, the Lake Chelan staff manages the medical withdrawal/detox until the process is completed and the client stable and on the mend.
The care and compassion of our medical and nursing staff is paramount at this level of care. Each client will have unique requirements that we meet 24 hours a day to diminish discomfort and restore physical and emotional health. We have the ability to deal with acute and sub-acute withdrawal symptoms.
Meeting all of Your Needs The Addiction Recovery Center is made up of a highly experienced team. We are Dual Diagnosis capable with the ability to address mental health needs by using our mental health team from the Women's Center for Emotional Trauma Recovery for assessment and consultation. Our team of medical doctors, licensed nurses, clinicians and support staff are cross-trained to assess dual diagnosis and inititiate treatment choices for recovery.
A Multidisciplinary Team The treatment of the consequences of alcohol and drug addiction is enhanced by the efforts of our multidisciplinary team. The team is comprised of a psychiatrist specializing in addictions, Certified Chemical Dependency Counselors, nursing personnel, psychologist, social workers, occupation therapist, pharmacist, activities therapist, dietician, family physicians, physician assistants. We have a high staff to patient ratio to ensure highly individualized care.
Patient Placement We use the American Society of Addiction Medicine PPC-2 to determine patient placement, length of service and discharge.
Multi-Addiction Addiction is not because of a substance, experience, person or thing. It is the relationship with substance or experience that becomes pathological. Most of us would choose to stop using something that causes problems. The consequences of the use of substances or experiences increases, and the ability to make choices decreases. Addiction is a process of decreasing choice.
Sensitive Dual Diagnosis Dual Diagnosis occurs when an individual is affected by BOTH chemical dependency and an emotional or psychiatric illness. Both affect an individual physically, psychologically, socially and spiritually. It is documented that 41% to 65% of individuals with a substance abuse disorder also have at least one emotional disorder. It is also documented that 51% of individuals who have a psychiatric disorder also have at least one substance abuse disorder.
Many mental health professionals have received little or no training about addictive disorders. Similarly, many addiction counselors have little or no training in diagnosing and treating behavioral disorders.
Researchers agree that it is unusual for an individual with co-occurring disorders to be diagnosed promptly and correctly - and to receive simultaneous or sequenced treatment by one clinician trained to treat both substance-related and mental health disorders, or by a unified mental health and substance abuse team.
Yet, it is the consensus of these same experts that integrated treatment is the preferred treatment course to co-occurring conditions. We at Lake Chelan have that preferred cross-trained treatment team.
Some examples of co-occurring dual diagnosis we often treat are clients who exhibit chemical dependency and depression, or chemical dependency and bulimia. Others are admitted for cocaine addiction with sexual compulsion or cocaine addiction with co-occurring attention deficit disorder.
Assessments performed by the Lake Chelan cross-trained dual diagnosis team may reveal underlying mental health issues such as bipolar disorder, post trauma stress disorder or anxiety disorder. Often an anxiety disorder will co-occur with benzodiazepine and alcohol dependence. Post trauma stress disorder can mask as depression or self-destructive rage.
Our team of medical doctors, psychiatrists, licensed nurses, clinicians, and support staff is extensively cross-trained to assess dual diagnosis and initiate treatment choices for recovery.
